WordSmith's manual describes certain basic operations, such as how to create new documents, how to sync documents between your organizer and desktop, how to cut, copy, paste, multi-paste and format your documents. For more information about the fundamentals, please see the Getting Started chapter of the manual. The manual also covers the extensive menus and Graffiti and Palm Portable and Stowaway keyboard shortcuts available with WordSmith.

You may access the manual by launching the application on your desktop and clicking on the Help button. Please note that you can launch the application from within the Palm Desktop software or by using the Windows Start button -> Programs -> WordSmith. The WordSmith manual is also available in Adobe PDF format. If you do not have an Adobe PDF reader, you may download it for free. Once you have installed the reader, please click here or below to view the manual.

Registration and Installation

Why doesn't my registration code fit in the area provided?
It is possible you have an older version of WordSmith. Make sure you have the latest version from our website. If you have purchased WordSmith from Handmark, please contact Handmark Support for help. Handmark's WordSmith Pro has a different registration code system.

I'm getting "Wordsmith.mpkg won't open" when installing to Mac OS X, What's wrong?
Please try this workaround: Open the WordSmith.dmg.gz file and open the WordSmith.dmg file. Once the WordSmith.dmg is mounted you can see the WordSmith.mpkg file on your desktop. Instead of double clicking this to run the installer, use "Show Package Contents" from the context menu on the WordSmith.mpkg file, Right click or ctrl-click to see the .pkg files Install them manually by double clicking on the WSDesktop and WSConduit.pkg files. If you have trouble with the .gz download file you could try downloading a non-compressed version from here:

WordSmith.dmg

Does WordSmith work with the Palm desktop for MacOSX?
Yes, we have full support for Palm desktop 4.x and OS X/OS 9. Please note the installation for OS 9 and Palm Desktop 4.x is manual. You have to install the wordsmith conduit to your Palm conduits folder. The WordSmith OS X version comes with an installer.

I'm getting an invalid error message when I enter my registration code, what's wrong?
Please make sure you are entering the "-" (dash) in the registration number. If you think you have a incorrect registration code, go to the register screen in WordSmith and see what it reads for your HotSync name and User ID. We generate codes based on this info. Send this information along with your registered user info to Support or Sales for a new registration code.

I'm seeing a PocketPurchase conduit and files or License Manager on my PC. What is this?
PocketPurchase was previously included with WordSmith. It was related to our co-developer's website. It is no longer supported. Please see the PocketPurchase site for info on removal. You can then install a newer WordSmith over your current PC installation if needed.

How much memory does WordSmith use on my handheld?
The WordSmith application is approximately 550k. You will need additional free memory for documents opened in WordSmith. The spellchecker is called SpellSmith and is about 35k. The spelldata.prc dictionaries are 1.2MB for the large dictionary and about 450k for the small dictionary. Either one can be installed. The larger dictionary is more complete, but spellcheck is a bit slower than when using the smaller spelldata file. The thesaurus is about 288k.

I've installed WordSmith and it is in German, how do I change this to English?
You may have accidentally installed the German localization option...We apologize for any inconvenience... you can delete the file called WrdS_Lang from your handheld device to fix this. You may need to use a free program like "Filez" to see this file on your handheld device. Just install and launch Filez on your handheld and choose to view/edit files. Locate the WrdS_Lang file and delete it.

Why does WordSmith need so much memory?
The reason that WS requires more memory than other applications is that it is a real word processor, where the other solutions are text editors. Most existing text editors uncompress a few Doc text records at a time and allow you to edit those records directly. But this would not work in WS, where you have to be able to do a "Select All", then a "bold". To support these and other features, WS needs to build an in-memory representation of the entire document, where text editors do not.  Since the average Palm will soon be at least an 8MB unit, we decided to architect for the future; there really is nothing that a desktop word processor can do that we can't, with our architecture.

What is the difference between Handmark's WordSmithPro and our WordSmith?
The WordSmith product is essentially the same but with slightly different branding. We granted Handmark, Inc. the right to distribute WordSmith in retail and on certain websites. If you purchase WordSmith from Handmark, you will receive technical support, upgrades, etc. from Handmark per their policies. If you have purchased from Handmark and need assistance, please visit Handmark's website or email Handmark Support.

Does WordSmith work with StarOffice?
Our software supports StarOffice but not as seamlessly as with Word. With StarOffice, you will need to save the doc as an rtf file for it to work and then add it to the WordSmith desktop application to sync with your Palm.

The menu for WordSmith never showed up in Microsoft Word how do I fix this?
Office XP and Office 2007 users do not have the menu option available in Word. Documents can be added to the WordSmith desktop application directly or by using a right click option instead.

Does WordSmith work with Windows XP?
Yes, although the Microsoft Word Integration option may not be supported. This is due to the high security settings in Office XP. When you install WordSmith, WordSmith trys to add a menu to Word's menu bar. This allows you to add a document in Word to WordSmith's sync list. XP users may not have this option available and can add documents to the WordSmith desktop application instead. There is also a right-click option to add documents to the sync list. If you have trouble with Word in XP after WordSmith install, you may want to remove the menu option.

How do I remove the WordSmith menu from Microsoft Word XP?
To remove the WordSmith add-in menu item from Microsoft Word, you need to delete the file from your Microsoft Office start up folder. The location may vary depending on the version of Windows. You can access that by: Clicking on "My Computer" on your desktop Clicking on "C Drive" > Click on "Program Files" (and Show Files (if no files are shown)) > Click on "Microsoft Office" > Click on "Office" > Click on "Startup" and delete the WS file. If you still have the WordSmith menu, try choosing customize under tools in Word. 1. launch word 2. menu: tools->customize 3. highlight "menu bar" and click on reset. You may need to delete the Normal.dot file and restart Word if you still have trouble. It is usually here: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Synchronization and Docs/Memos

Why can't I keep my doc's on the SD/MMC card and sync them?
WordSmith isn't able to access the SD/MMC card for synchronization. Any files stored on the card won't be seen by the WordSmith conduit. We are planning on adding this support in the future. You can read or edit documents on the card, but to sync the doc must be in RAM with WordSmith.

I deleted a document from the Palm delete application and I lost all my documents! What happened?
The WordSmith application allows you to delete documents from within the document or within the document list. You should always delete documents from within the WordSmith program. The Palm delete app. should never be used to delete documents or FineType fonts. This is a limitation of the PalmOS, it is designed to be used to delete applications, not documents.

Why can't I see my formatting in memos on the desktop?
Formatting in WordSmith memos is for display only on the handheld. If you open a memo that displays formatting in WordSmith in your Palm Desktop software or in the regular memo pad application you will see formatting tags in place of the actual formatting.

Why can't I search WordSmith documents with the Palm OS "find" feature?
Palm OS "find" can't access WordSmith's rich text fields. This is why It can't search the WordSmith docs. You have to use WordSmith's own "find" option to search in one document at a time. We are hoping to add an option to search in all WordSmith documents in the future.

I have a device crash/reset when using the Palm OS "find" feature. What is wrong?
This is an issue on newer Palm OS 5 devices only. If you are running WordSmith from the device RAM on a Palm OS 5.4 or better device you can't use the Palm OS "Find". If you move WordSmith to the memory card Palm/Launcher directory, you can run it from there for document reading and editing and should be able to still use the Palm "Find". Unfortunately document sync cannot be performed when WordSmith is running from the memory card.

My Mac WordSmith sync is hanging up or trying to create large RTF files when I sync. What's wrong?
You may need a newer conduit. We have fixed a problem with the conduit syncing documents from the handheld to the Mac desktop. If you don't have version 2.1 or better of wordsmith, please upgrade by installing our demo version over your current Mac WordSmith on desktop and handheld.  If this doesn't help, try increasing the memory allocation to the conduit manager.

My Mac WordSmith isn't synching at all. What's going on?
Please note if you have Palm desktop 4 and Mac OS 9, you have to manually install the wordsmith conduit to the proper location. This is most likely in the system folder with your other Palm desktop conduits. If you still are having trouble with your sync, it may be due to some old Palm desktop preference files. First erase all traces of Wordsmith from the Mac and your Palm and rebuild the desktop on the Mac. Then reinstall your Palm desktop software and remove the following files from the system folder/ preferences folder: (com.palmHS.T.S.plist ; com.palm.HS.T.PC.plist ; com.palm.HS.T.USB.plist ; and ;com.palm.Hotsync.plist) Then reinstall WordSmith and you should be able to sync. For general sync trouble on the Mac, please try deleting the WordSmith.dat file on your Mac. This will clear the WordSmith sync list and may help with syncing. You may be able to find it here:
Library/Application Support/Palm Hotsync/Users/Username/WordSmith
or
Users/(username)/Documents/Palm/Users/(name)/WordSmith or Palm/Users/(username)/WordSmith
The location of WordSmith.dat differs depending on your OS and Version of Palm desktop software.

I'm getting an "unable to transfer document" message. Help?
Please try deleting the WordSmith.dat file on your desktop computer. This will clear the WordSmith sync list and may help with syncing. You should be able to find it here:

Users/(username)/Documents/Palm/Users/(name)/WordSmith
or
Palm/Users/(username)/WordSmith

Or in a similar location on the desktop.  Then hotsync and this should allow you to add the document back to sync. You can either check the sync box in the document details on the handheld or if you don't have a copy on the handheld, you can add the document to the desktop wordsmith sync list again.

I'm getting an error when using the WordSmith menu in Office XP, what am I doing wrong?
The WordSmith menu option may not be available in Office XP at this time. There is a compatibility problem. You can use the WordSmith desktop application to add documents instead. WordSmith also offers a right-click option to add documents to the sync list.

FineType and Display Issues

Why can't I use the full-screen support on my Sony TH55?
WordSmith isn't able to support the collapsible graffiti area on this device. We hope to have a fix for this in the future. It looks like Sony made some software changes with this device. At this time the graffiti area can't be collapsed in WordSmith.

Why can't I use the full-screen support on my Tungsten T3?
You may need to upgrade to the latest WordSmith on your handheld. Please note: the T3 screen support is an option during installation with the Windows installer only. If you upgraded on the handheld only or are using a Mac or Linux installer, you can download the T3 display support files here: (zip) unzip and install the files to your handheld. This is for Tungsten T3 users only.

Why can't I see any highlighting when selecting text on my color device?
There are different colors you can select for the highlight color in WordSmith, please check the display options in the options menu and make sure it isn't the same color as your background.

Every document I have in WordSmith shows up as an Icon on my Launcher screen.. Why?
This is an issue with users of LauncherIII software. WordSmith documents are being seen as application files. To stop this, go into your LauncherIII preferences and uncheck the WordSmith box.

Need More small fonts? Try Small Font...only $2 on PalmGear.

Need FineType display fonts? We have some FineType fonts converted from Larabiefonts available here. (zip) FineType fonts converted from AcidFonts are available here. (zip) FineType fonts converted from Bitstream's Open Source Vera font are available here. (zip)

On my Sony CLIE, the fonts are really tiny. Why?
You may need to choose a larger display size in display options. If this doesn't help, you should install larger FineType fonts. You can customize the size of FineType fonts you install to your handheld using the advanced mode of the desktop FineType converter (windows only) There is also a large plain font that comes with wordsmith, you can choose this in your "show as" fonts in the font selector. If you didn't choose to install this font, you can find it in your WordSmith directory on the desktop and install to the handheld.

My fonts on the document list screen aren't in high resolution on my Sony CLIE. What's wrong?
This may be due to the Sony's High Res-Assist prefs setting. Go to the prefs application on the device and use the menu in the upper right to drop down to High Res Assist. Make sure WordSmith isn't excluded. The fonts in the document list screen are not included when using FineType fonts in a WordSmith document.

Why can't I use color fonts with FineType display?
The FineType high resolution display fonts use the color pixels to create anti-aliasing, due to technical limitations you can't use color fonts with this type of display. You can turn FineType high resolution off and use color with these fonts. This option is in display options.

What does "light" and "heavy" mean in the FineType display options?
Light uses a reduced palette and generally the characters are less full and sharper. Heavy uses a larger palette and generally the characters are more full and less sharp.

I have display trouble when using FineType - why?
If you have programs like Contrast or Chrome, these won't work properly with the FineType display. The color pixels are used to create the FineType display and programs that alter colors or color depth can be a problem. If you have color depth set to 16 bit, you may need to change it to 8.

How do I delete FineType fonts?
FineType fonts are best deleted using the FineType Manager on the palm or by using a free Palm application like Filez.  FineType fonts on the handheld have "FTFt" at the end of the name. For example: "ArialFTFt.pdb".

When I exit WordSmith on my color Sony CLIE, my screen display is partially frozen. What's wrong?
You may  be using something called SwitchDash.  You need to disable auto hi-res for the launcher in SwitchDash to fix the problem.

I'm missing some items on my menus on my Sony CLIE, why?
The Sony has an option called "jog-dial assist" that lets you add options to menus. This will push other options off of a menu that is already full. Turn off this option and you should see the menu options.

I have a document with a lot of color fonts in it; in WordSmith only some of the colors show up. What is the problem?
WordSmith only supports a total of 16 colors in a document.

Why can't I see all my docs in WordSmith, but I can see them in TealDoc?
TealDoc has an option in the docs menu that allows you to set your docs to TealDoc or public format. Setting to public format will allow you to open them in WordSmith.

Hacks and Languages

Why can't I rotate the screen like in other readers?
This isn't a feature of WordSmith but we have found a freeware hack called FlipHack that works well with WordSmith. Please note this won't work correctly if you have FineType display selected in your display options. FlipHack is not for OS 5 devices. For more info on FlipHack please see www.byteswapped.com. WordSmith supports screen rotation for landscape view on some newer devices.

I have SmartCell's TextPlus, why doesn't it work with WordSmith?
There have been some changes in WordSmith to support newer devices and this causes issues with TextPlus. We apologize for any trouble and hope to support it in the future. For now you can only use TextPlus if you have a pre-OS 5 device and are using an older version of WordSmith.

Why can't I paste more than one line? This is most likely due to use of a hack. Clipboard hacks work by intercepting the clipboard functions of the Palm OS. In later versions of the Palm OS (3.2 and above), a new function called 'append' was added that allows for much larger (64K) clipboards. WordSmith takes advantage of this functionality if it is running on a device that supports it. Unfortunately, most of the clipboard hacks have not been updated to intercept the 'append' function. As a result, most clipboard hacks end up only copying the first line of the block of text that you are trying to copy in Wordsmith. The only way to address this issue is to disable the offending clipboard hack and notify the author of the hack that you want a fixed version that supports the clipboard 'append' function.

Why don't my text programs or hacks work with WordSmith?
WordSmith may not work with many hacks/apps because of the way WS uses the Palm OS fields (we basically had to rewrite the fields to get rich text to work)... The basic Palm OS fields only support one font and since these hacks rely on those types of Palm fields it won't work with WordSmith. We have contacted  the makers of some of these apps/hacks to see if it is possible to get these apps to work together.

Can I use WordSmith with different languages?
WordSmith can support most languages. If you have FineType display turned on, you may need to turn this off. Try selecting "Asian hack support" in the preferences; this may help depending what language hack or localizer software you are using.  WordSmith may have trouble with languages that are not directly supported by Palm OS. Right to Left Languages are not currently supported.

I am unable to use CKJOS with WordSmith what's wrong?
To use CKJOS you have to enable "Asian hacks" in the preferences. You also must turn off FineType display option.

Spellchecker, Thesaurus and VFS

How do I install the Spellchecker and Thesaurus?
You can choose these options during the installation of WordSmith to your desktop PC. If you have already installed WS and didn't choose these options, you can reinstall WS to the PC and select these or you can locate the files in the Wordsmith directory on your PC. Usually in C:program files/wordsmith. Install the following files to your handheld device: SpellSmith.prc, ThesData.pdb, and SpellDataSmall.pdb or SpellDataLarge.pdb the large or small spelling dictionaries are depending on how much free memory you have available.

Can I install the spellchecker and thesaurus to my expansion memory to save RAM?
You can install the files: spelldata, thesdata and spellsmith to your expansion card only if you are using an application like PiDirect or MemHack. If you use a program like PiDirect or Memhack for OS 5 users, you may be able to run the Spell dictionary (spelldata) and the thesaurus (thesdata) from your Memory Stick or SD/MM card. You can enable these files with PiDirect on the card or stick and make sure they aren't set to read only. WordSmith and documents have to stay in RAM to sync with the conduit.

How do I move a document to my SD card or Memory Stick?
There are several ways to do this, basically if you have the WordSmith with VFS support installed on an appropriate device; you would pick the card as you would change the category the document is in. Once on the card, you can create additional categories. The documents will be moved to the wordsmith directory on the card. Only documents in RAM are able to sync with the desktop.

I'm having trouble moving a file to my expansion card with VFS. What's wrong?
Make sure the file is readable in WordSmith. If you can read it in WordSmith in RAM, you should be able to from the card. If the file name has any "/", "\", ":", "*", "<", ">", or "?" or other non-letter characters in it VFS may not be able to handle this file. In this case the best thing to do is to rename the file. If you are manually moving files to the expansion memory, be sure to put them in the WordSmith directory on the CF/SD/MMC/Memory Stick. If you move them using WordSmith, they will automatically be placed in the correct directory on your expansion memory.

E-Books and Bookmarks

I'm having trouble with an ebook. WordSmith can't see it...why?
WordSmith can only read .pdb files not .prc. If you are having trouble, the documents may not be in Palm doc format. Some older document converters made .prc files...Try renaming them to end in .pdb and see if this helps.. WordSmith can read any Palm DOC format ebook or document. Note: a PDB isn't necessarily Palm DOC format... WordSmith format documents are only available when converted using our conduit from a desktop document or if you create a rich text document in your palm in wordsmith. memoware.com has a lot of free ebook and documents for your handheld.. Memoware's FAQ page explains the different Palm ebook and document formats...Please see this page for info on the different readers and formats.

When I create bookmarks on the Handheld and transfer the document to the desktop, the bookmark names aren't preserved. What's wrong?
When you create bookmarks in WS, it creates unnamed bookmarks.  The conduit then assigns names.  If you change the names on the desktop, they will be preserved on the Palm but there is no way to assign them on the Palm.

The main reason for this is a problem in user expectation.  Most users would expect to be able to use spaces and punctuation in bookmark names.  However, Word only allows letters, numbers and the '_' character.  No spaces or punctuation of any kind.  Because of this limitation, we would have to impose the same limitation in WordSmith were we to implement bookmark naming.

Printing with WordSmith

Can I print documents using WordSmith?
Yes, currently you can print rich text documents (in the WordSmith format) using Bachmann Software's PrintBoy documents application, and The InStep Group's application called InStep Print 2.0.  In addition, you can print plain doc files with other print applications. If you have a rich text document, you can use the save as Plain Text (Palm Doc) feature to strip out the rich text and then print it. To locate this feature, open a rich text document (the document will have a "w" to the left of the name in the document list view screen), open the File menu, select Save/Save As, check the box for Plain Text (Palm Doc) and then tap OK.

Miscellaneous FAQ's

I'm having trouble with graffiti input on my Sony TG-50 device, I get an error message about an active text field. What's wrong?
We apologize, there is an issue with graffiti input and WordSmith on this device. You can try the following workaround: Invoke the "silkscreen keyboard" - the active area now becomes a text field, you can press the graffiti button and use graffiti rather than the onscreen keyboard.

How does WordSmith differ from other text editors?
We believe that WordSmith is better than the "competition" in many ways. In a nutshell, WordSmith a full-featured word processing application for the Palm ... it is intended for use as a serious word processing program. For one major difference, try inputting text via the keyboard! Unlike other applications, WordSmith will keep up with even the fastest of typers! WordSmith also allows unlimited undo and re-do. If you look at the partial list of features that we offer here and compare it to the competition, you'll quickly see the difference. There are many features and keyboard shortcuts listed in our manual that's included with the download. Please note that Tables are not fully supported in WS. Please feel free to download WordSmith and try it out.
