BackupBuddy.Net Service Outage

This weekend we had our first BackupBuddy.Net outage, and we would like to offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience. A bad memory module led to a series of cascading failures which happened to affect our backup servers. We have fixed the problem and are taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again, including more frequent monitoring of our replication servers.

Additionally, we have extended everybody's subscription by three months.

BackupBuddyVFS 4 Released!

As we mentioned in a prior posting, we've been hard at work developing and testing our new version of BackupBuddyVFS, version 4, and it's now been released!

In case you missed it, here's a summary of the new features:

Standard Zip compression and encryption: this allows you to access your backup files directly on your desktop computer, for example. Note that Zip encryption isn't very strong, so we still support our legacy compression and encryption format (based on Zip, and TEA, respectively). Zip file creation requires a device running Palm OS 5 or later.

Third-party application locking (Advanced mode): newer Palm devices, such as the Treo 650/700p, work with a new type of memory (i.e. Non-Volatile File System, or NVFS). Unfortunately some older background applications don't interact well with this type of memory, and can cause the device to become unstable especially when doing large amounts of file read/writes. You now have the option to lock those applications in memory during our backup operations to make backups more reliable.

Continuous backup (Advanced mode): allows you to keep your important files continously backed up as you use your device. So for example, if you add an entry to your Address Book and switch away or power off your device, the file will be backed up immediately.

Multiple backup sets (Advanced mode): allows you to tailor your backups more precisely. e.g. have one profile for scheduled backups, and another when backing up when your device powers off.

Global 'Excludes' (Advanced mode): instead of having to manually exclude the same files from multiple backup sets, you can put the files you want excluded from all sets in the global exclude set.

Backup on low battery

Automatic checkpoint creation (Advanced mode): BackupBuddyVFS can now automatically create checkpoints every X days, and every X backups. You can also limit how much space to allocate to checkpoints.

Tree-View (Advanced mode): the older versions of BackupBuddyVFS presented your backup files in a flat list; version 4 replaces this with a tree view making it easier for you to identify which files you'd like to backup and restore.

BackupBuddyVFS 4 is a paid upgrade (the first in over 18 months) and upgrade pricing is $11.95 for our existing customers, all of whom should have received the discount code already via email. As we have mentioned previously, we have been working very hard over the past year on our next generation of mobile backup technology: BackupBuddy.Net. And it's now finally available!

Just to recap: BackupBuddy.Net allows you to wirelessly backup your Treo smartphone over the Internet. It has been engineered to be both extremely fast and extremely secure.

Our focus for BackupBuddy.Net is ease-of-use and reliability. So one of the features we spent a lot of time perfecting is our unique Trickle Backup feature. Trickle Backup allows BackupBuddy.Net to transparently and continuously backup your files when you're not actively using your Treo. It stays completely out of your way and does not interfere with the use of your Treo. In fact it's so transparent, you may even forget that it's active. BackupBuddy.Net Professional Feature Complete Beta available!

We have just posted a feature-complete version of BackupBuddy.Net Profesional, our wireless backup appplication for Treo's. It now includes:

Complete wireless backup and restore of your device
Selective Backup & Restore - you can customize both your backups and restores via the 'Customize' button (which appears if you have subscribed) and via the menu items which are always available (whether you have subscribed or not)
Restore Archived items - files that you have deleted from your device can now be restored via the 'Restore Archived' menu item. Archived items are stored on the server for up to one month.
When setting up your account for the first time, you're now given the choice of having a 'Basic' or 'Pro' mode trial

Additionally, we have recently discovered (and implemented a workaround for) a bug in the Treo 700p ROM that may prevent existing Basic and Pro beta users from connecting and receiving the auto-update.

BackupBuddy for Windows maintenance release: 2.1.6

In addition to the new BackupBuddyVFS 4 beta we mentioned in an earlier posting, today we have also released BackupBuddy for Windows 2.1.6. It is primarily a maintenance release, and specifically addresses compatibility issues with the Treo 700p, including a new version of AutoSync.

Please note that the ability to skip a backup on a bluetooth hotsync does not currently work on the 700p (due to a change in the bluetooth implementation on the device), so BackupBuddy will always backup over bluetooth whether or not the box is checked on the 700p. So please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

This is a free update - simply install it over your existing version - there is no need to uninstall first. All your backup files and settings will be preserved.

We've been hard at work on our new BackupBuddyVFS (version 4) and have posted a public beta; the download URL is below. The documentation hasn't (yet) been updated, but here's a summary of the new features:

Or simply use your existing version of BackupBuddyVFS to create a checkpoint prior to running the beta version.

Things have been quiet here lately as we've been working very hard on our next generation of mobile backup technology. Well today, we're very excited to be able to share with you what's been keeping us so busy: BackupBuddy.Net.

BackupBuddy.Net allows you to wireless backup their your Treo smartphone over the Internet to one of our servers. It is extremely secure: all your data is encrypted end-to-end (with AES encryption) and stored in an encrypted form - we absolutely cannot access your data, and we don't even store your password. It is also extremely fast: your data as highly compressed as it is being sent over the air and device backups (and restores) happen quickly so as to not slow you down when you're on-the-go.

One of the features that we think is super-sexy is our Trickle Backup^TM feature. Trickle Backup allows BackupBuddy.Net to transparently and continuously backup all your files to our server when you're not actively using your Treo. It is designed to stay completely out of your way and not interfere with the use of your Treo.

Our initial release of BackupBuddy.Net backs up only essential PIM files: Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Memos. A subsequent release (Professional Edition) will add backup of the entire device. BackupBuddy.Net is a subscription service - pricing has yet to be determined.

As we've mentioned before, we're pretty excited about BBVFS 3.2 which we think is by far the best BBVFS yet. Here's some of what's got us so jazzed:

We're not just adding features; we're constantly squashing bugs too, and we've rolled in a ton of bug fixes, including, but not limited to:

FIX: Problem restoring certain databases with records > 64K
FIX: Backup log corruption in German builds
FIX: BBVFS Personal backing up to T5 internal drive instead of SD card
FIX: Unable to backup some T3 files and WiFi files
FIX: Crash when attempting to backup to a locked SD card
