Version 2.0.14

 (June 8, 2004)

BackupBuddy 2.0 is a ground-up rewrite of BackupBuddy, and contains many new and exciting features:

***NEW RELEASE DETAILS***

Using a very sophisticated and unique process, this updated version of the award-winning BackupBuddy program offers an unprecedented level of protection for your valuable handheld data.

BackupBuddy 2 protects all the contents of your handheld by storing, in a database on your PC, all changes made to your device since your last backup. BackupBuddy2 can restore copies of your programs, data files and settings in the event of any emergency: crashing of your handheld caused by an errant program, an accidental file deletion and damage or theft of your PDA.

You can also restore any file, or even your entire handheld contents, from a backup made at some time in the past - this would return your handheld to its previous state prior to the occurrence of the problem, a process we call "ZoomBack(TM)".

KEY BENEFITS:

  • Comprehensive backup for PalmOS handhelds, and attached memory cards, to your Windows PC (the bundled Palm software does NOT do this), plus:
  • Mobile back-up to SD/MMC/Memory Stick for when you're traveling
  • Restores your handheld and your files to a previous healthy state after a system crash, virus attack, or some other catastrophic event
  • Resolve problems by removing any system changes that were made since the last time you remember your handheld working correctly
  • Create restore checkpoints which can used when you make changes to your handheld that may be risky
  • Automatically create checkpoints during each HotSync, or as frequently as you want
  • Retrieves previous files individually that have been deleted or overwritten, including ALL previous versions backed up by BackupBuddy
  • Upgrading handhelds is greatly simplified when using BackupBuddy
  • Device imaging and cloning are made easy with BackupBuddy
  • User manual written by Denny Atkin (author of Sony CLIE for Dummies and former Editorial Director for Handheld Computing magazine) gets you started quickly and helps you get the most out of BackupBuddy

ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
  • Exclude specific files, file types, and card directories from being backed up
  • AutoSync initiates a HotSync daily at your chosen time
  • TimeSync synchronizes the clocks on your handheld and your PC
  • Multi-user support to store backups for multiple users and/or handhelds on one PC
  • Enable or disable backups during modem and Bluetooth HotSync
  • Free trial period of 15 days

This release contains only minor bug fixes and enhancements as follows:

  • Network backups from the desktop computer are now performed in the background to allow the Cancel button in the Network Backup window to be more responsive
  • Certain versions of Windows have a bug in the mfc42.dll file that could prevent BackupBuddy from properly backing up all files to the network.  A (transparent) workaround has been implemented in this release
  • A button to allow quick access to network backup settings has been added to the main window
  • Significantly improved performance when removing duplicate entries
  • A bug that manifested when Archive and Expansion backup options were selected for devices with no expansion cards has been fixed

1.2

  • New features (described in detail in the accompanying manual):
-Network backup and restore of Palm OS backup files
-A new Palm OS version of BackupBuddy that runs on the organizer to allow backup and restore of critical files via a modem connection.  Please note the version of the Palm BackupBuddy client that can install itself into Flash/non-volatile memory is available in the BackupBuddy Flash Pack Add-On only, due to licensing restrictions.  If you are an existing TRG FlashPro user, you do not need to purchase the Flash Pack Add-On.
-Support for backup of Handspring Springboard modules
    -Support for Palm OS 3.5
-The ability to remove duplicate entries from built-in applications
-The ability to synchronize your Palm clock to that of your desktop computer
  • Installer:
-Faster (and invisible) restart of HotSync Manager during installation
  • Manual:
-Revised, expanded, and now in Adobe PDF format.

1.1

  • Installer:
-Significantly enhanced install experience, especially for first-time users.
-No longer requires reboots after installation
    -Misc. other changes
  • Configuration Manager:
-ToolTips and Online Help support (particularly nice for those with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or above)
-Can now use the space-bar to select/deselect files in the exclude box
-A "clear all" button has been added to deselect all files in the exclude box
-Prior to this release, updating the Palm Desktop software would corrupt BackupBuddy's registry settings. The configuration manager is now able to detect this, and launching it after upgrading the desktop software will repair BackupBuddy's registry settings.
  • BackupBuddy: minor changes and full compatibility verified for the PalmVII and Palm OS3.3

1.07

  • Performance improvements when backing up large-capacity devices (e.g. users of TRG memory board products)

1.06

  •     Two minor new tweaks added:
  • Ability to completely disable BackupBuddy from running during modem-based HotSync's (new Configuration Manager option).
  • BackupBuddy is now a bit smarter about knowing that your unit was hard-reset, and will  perform a very speedy backup after your files have been restored.  Note:  BackupBuddy will be unable to do this if: 1) you have selected the option Backup Unsaved Preferences, because when the Unsaved Preferences.PRC file is restored to the handheld, the function call that tells BackupBuddy that the device was reset gets confused 2) you are restoring with the Desktop overwrites Handheld option - again this is because the Unsaved Preferences file is already on the device
  • Verified full compatibility with FlashPro, from TRG.

1.05

Implemented changes for Platinum Certification - not publicly released

  1. Better error detection and recovery under low RAM and disk-space conditions, as well as ability to recover from a lost connection (if Pilot is pulled from the cradle).
  2. Minor UI tweaks
  3. Uninstaller now removes BB preferences files for each user when BB/NG is uninstalled
  4. Flash-ROM backup tweaks for compatibility with the PalmIIIx and PalmV - if you had a prior version of BB/NG installed and enabled FlashROM backup you may have two extraneous files in your ROM_Files directory, "NetSync.PRC" and "Setup.PRC".  These can be deleted.
  5. Platinum testing:  passed.

1.04

  1. Added option to backup "Unsaved Preferences" database.   Per communication with 3Com, upcoming OS revisions (e.g. 3.1 and later) may not support the restoration of this database (hence it's name), and may cause a fatal exception during a restore if this database is found in the backup directory.  As such, by default, BBNG does not backup this database.
  2. Backup of conduit databases - the meaning of this option has been changed somewhat in this release.  If disabed, BBNG will only skip databases that are mapped to the built-in Palm applications (e.g. Memo, Address, ToDo, Datebook, Expense, and Mail) as some applications require their databases (that are synchronized against conduits) to actually be backed up (e.g. QMate) to enable a proper restore.

1.03

  1. Obscure problem with backing up TRG FlashROM files fixed:  if a user had a copy of a file in FlashROM and a copy also in RAM, and the files had different version numbers, neither would be properly backed up.
  2. New installation package (Wise Solutions) used:
-Some users complained InstallShield was incompatible with their particular Windows configuration
    -New installer is significantly smaller
-Simplified uninstallation:  entirely done through the Windows Add/Remove control panel (ie. no need to run the supplied uninstall program first)
  3. Some minor changes to the manual

1.02

  1. Although the files would restore correctly in the eventuality of a hard-reset, a minor incompatibility between generated "PDB" databases and J-File utilities (e.g. jconv, etc) was found and fixed.

1.01

  1. Significantly lower memory usage, particularly when backing up large PDBs
  2. Changed algorithm used for mapping Palm OS database names to Windows file names, to be more compatible with the default System conduit.  This avoids duplicate files being created in the backup directory for handheld files containing certain punctuation symbols
  3. A reported problem on Windows95/98 with FlashBuilder/PRC and BBNG generating an error when moving files between the Backup directory and ROM_Files directory has been fixed.
  4. Added option to configuration manager:  "Skip QuickSheet databases".
